“At first I used to dream of the incident, and relive the hollow horror of watching a man die, but later, when it became obvious Lieutenant Steele would remain lost, the dream changed. I was then on the riverbed watching the corpse pass me in the subdued, filtered light of the failing day.”

Spine-tingling, thought-provoking, nostalgic, surprising, eerie, insightful — a collection of tales from award winning short story writer, Heikki Hietala. Like filtered light casting shadows in a dense forest, playing tricks with your eyes...

... the dark chill lurks. The brittle crack of ice, a flutter of wing, atonal harmonies, a shift in perspective...

“Breathtaking, outstanding, complete.”
—Aison Wells

“…an ineradicable sense of dark chill lurking.”
—Dan Holloway

Filtered Light Assorted Tales eBook Heikki Hietala

These are beautifully crafted stories which, unlike some collections, don't share themes, settings or characters. What does hold them together and give the collection its unity is the author's commitment to each. The range of topics he covers and the effects he achieves are impressive. With each one, he guides you into his chosen atmosphere and lets it settle around you as you begin to wonder whether this will be a haunting, melancholy slice of memory or a sly twisting journey into a world which suddenly moves out of its normality into some impossibility which is nonetheless gripping and persuasive. There's nostalgia, madness, science fiction, a chilling blend of the shooting powers of guns and cameras, music that's literally ghostly, but there's also a wry, gentle humour. They're easy and very satisfying to read and they're great examples of how the short story form works in the hands of someone who understands exactly what can be achieved with it.

Filtered Light Assorted Tales eBook Heikki Hietala Reviews

There is something to please every reader in 'Filtered Light & Other Stories' - an air of the mysterious, the spine-tingling and chilling, the magical, but also something held-back and realistic - and all this is infused with a soft and clever sense of humour throughout.

Heikki Hietala has researched different subjects and allows his readers to feel drawn in to every story in a gentle, unhurried and confident way. At times I felt I was reading Edgar Allan Poe, at others Alice Munroe, Elizabeth Strout, then stories worthy of Scheherazade's imagination and allure or out of a science fiction book.

It is not easy to write short stories that are both captivating but also have an economy of words. Heikki Hietala very subtly, yet masterfully, manages to weave his stories and each one leaves the reader with a different taste. There is nothing clumsy or crude about Heikki Hietala's writing; it flows well and is well-paced. So much is said between the lines and the stories linger in the reader's mind long after they are over.

His stories are evocative and well worth the read! I would definitely recommend them without hesitation.
This is a collection of wild imaginary tales and probably fully genuine tales, and tales in between. It's fascinating to start to read a new tale after a tale and to dive into the intriguing story telling. I admire this kind of talent, I can't understand how somebody can do it, but what the heck, I enjoy it!

For example the story of the hunter in Oulu, so nice description of the old times, even that would be enough to entertain. But what an ending! That has been haunting my nerves for weeks now.

This is something for the reader like me, who doesn't have the time and energy (and patience?) to read a 400 page book. Can I get some more, please?
One of the things I really like about Hietala short stories is the way he takes you there. 'There' could be anywhere - a snowbound forest in Finland, a water logged lane in WW2 England, a souk in Algiers. This small collection will transport you to all these places, entertain, surprise, sometimes send a shiver down your spine. And while you're enjoying his deft artistry with words as he creates atmosphere, or dancing shadows of dark and light on a row of leather-bound books, you'll get into his character's heads.

Another thing I like is how well he knows his subject matter. In the first story he'll regale you with the intricacies of cameras from a bygone age. You'll be there with him as he loads the film, ratchets the mechanism for the next frame. In another, he'll take you into the Finnish woods in winter, with a Winchester and show you the mating dance of the grouse.

I really enjoyed these stories, enjoyed these little vignettes from life and finding the little twist at the end. My only question is - where is 'Filtered Light'? Or will that appear in a later volume?
Who says the short story is dead? This collection should put that claim to rest, because every one of these stories is a keeper, worthy of the best literary company.

There's a surprising amount of variation. Some pieces are very short, some are lengthy. Some are set in the frozen reaches of northern Europe, some in North Africa. Many have a supernatural or at least speculative aspect but others work just as well on the everyday plane. Several wrap up with a startling O Henryesque twist, but as soon as you begin looking for that kind of conclusion, the author surprises you.

Honorable mention is due to the title piece, "Filtered Light," and to "The Summerhouse." However, for me, two others stand out as being even more delightful "Over the Bridge," which brings Hermann Hesse to mind, and "Shaggy," which is great fun, albeit with soul.

It wouldn't surprise me to know that people will still be reading at least some of these well crafted tales many years into the future.
